CAPTAIN'S CORNER

SENIOR CAPTAIN

As the end of Term 3 draws near, there is a strange feeling beginning to settle in for most Year 12s. The end of the year is no longer something distant, and the final VCE exams feel right around the corner. With our final SACs approaching in a week or two, it feels unreal knowing that this will be the last SAC I ever sit as a student in a McKinnon uniform.

Funnily enough, there is something quite strange about reaching a milestone that you've spent years working towards. On one hand, there is a sense of relief. The end of the SAC season marks the beginning of the final stretch towards the VCE exams, and there is something satisfying about knowing that the finish line is finally within sight. But on the other hand, it also leaves an aftertaste of sorrow and nostalgia. After six years at McKinnon, the thought that these are some of the final events, classes, and ordinary school days we'll ever experience is difficult to fully comprehend.

However, as much as the pressure amps up, I truly do think that we must not lose sight of how much time we actually have left. Sure, there is still plenty of work ahead, and having a focussed mindset is essential in making sure we reach our final goals. But taking a break, going for a walk, playing a game of basketball, or simply getting away from the desk for a while and enjoying the final days of your school life can also make a huge difference, especially if you don't want to burn out as the big day looms.

And recently, the Athletics Carnival gave us just that, providing a deserving escape from the intensity of the term.

Although I wasn't able to attend myself, hearing about the enthusiasm and school spirit throughout the day was a reminder of what makes McKinnon such a special place. The houses, costumes, competition, and excitement gave students a brief chance to step away from SACs and study and simply enjoy being at school. It's a nice reminder that even in the busiest terms of the year, McKinnon still knows how to make time for a bit of fun.

For us Year 12s, these moments are becoming increasingly precious. The final SACs, lunchtime conversations with friends, joking around between classes, and even chatting with teachers can all feel like ordinary parts of another school day. Yet, in only a few months, many of these things will become memories.

The finish line is getting closer, but perhaps that is exactly why we should look around a little more before we cross it. Let's continue to work towards our goals, support one another, and make the most of these final months. We may be preparing for what comes next, but we should also remember to appreciate what we are about to leave behind.

JUNIOR CAPTAIN

It has been an exciting time for the Year 9 cohort, with some students attending the Monash Commemorative Service at Victorian Parliament, while the rest of the year level looked forward to one of the most anticipated events of the year - Year 9 Camp!

Nothing beats taking a break from the busy school year, spending time with friends and enjoying a few days away from the usual school routine. From Monday 3 to Friday 7 August, Year 9 students attended the Campaspe Downs camp in groups for an exciting three-day program. Throughout the camp, students took part in action packed activities such as laser tag, team challenges, raft building, the giant swing, abseiling, the tram challenge, canoeing, archery and the Leap of Faith. Each activity brought plenty of excitement, teamwork and, of course, lots of laughs!

The fun continued into the evenings with Sports Night and Trivia Night, where students competed, cheered each other on and made memories together. Whether we were challenging ourselves, working as a team or simply enjoying time with friends in the cabin, there was never a dull moment. Year 9 camp was a fantastic opportunity to step outside our comfort zones, strengthen friendships and create unforgettable memories.

Alongside the excitement of Year 9 Camp, a few students also had the opportunity to represent our school at the Monash Commemorative Service at Victorian Parliament.

The service was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Sir John Monash and recognise his contributions to Australia. Students participated respectfully in the commemorations and gained a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the event. The event concluded with an afternoon tea, where McKinnon students confidently engaged in conversations with the guest speakers, demonstrating their curiosity and willingness to connect with members of the community.
