BOOK WEEK
Book Week at McKinnon was a glorious celebration of reading across both campuses! We had so many joyous events and it was wonderful to see so many students involved. We had Book Trivia, Book Drives, Book Recommendation displays in the library, Book Baking, Book Readings, Book Debates, and finally Book Dress-Up!

Our orchestra of 39 students played with passion, weaving each of our melodies to create a beautiful symphony. I stretched the last note with my bow, moving it across the strings. Silence. You could hear the last note echoing through our rehearsal space. I felt alive with music.

A pale blue dot in a void of empty space is the sum of human impact. Lives equate to fractions of a star’s burning. I wake, and see stars around me, scorching where they stand, and waiting for a supernova. Stellar death happens quicker, but you continue lighting the sky.

Book Recommendation
"Listen: Billy Pilgrim has become unstuck in time."
Kurt Vonnegut's magnum opus Slaughterhouse Five is hailed as one of the greatest anti-war novels of all time. It follows Billy Pilgrim, a soldier in WW2 and an unwilling time traveler who experiences his life out of order, from being captured by Germans, immediately followed by being born, to being held prisoner in Dresden, immediately followed by aliens abducting him 10 years later (it makes sense in context), and finally being among the only survivors when Dresden is firebombed by the Americans ("So it goes"). Vonnegut pulls from his own experiences in the war, including being held prisoner in Dresden in the real-life Slaughterhouse 5, to craft a brilliantly funny, yet melancholic novel that emphasises the reality that, in war, there are no heroes, only victims.

BOOK WEEK BAKING COMPETITION
Senuly Silva is a Year 12 student who has entered the baking competition every year since we started celebrating Book Week and she has won every year.
This was her last entry, and it was brilliant!

BOOK WEEK BOOK SWAP
On Tuesday 25 August, to celebrate Book Week, McKinnon had their annual Book Swap, which was highly successful.
This was a fun opportunity to bring old books that you don’t want to read anymore and swap them out for new and improved books for your acquired taste. It was a great way to meet new people by recommending books and exploring new genres to see what types of books would suit you best. This event was also great for sharing stories that you loved and passing them on to your friends!
It was wonderful to see brand new faces at this event and to see everyone help one another by recommending books they’ve read to their peers. The turnout was really pleasing, and it was great to see so many Year 8s and 9s participating in this wonderful event.
Overall, the Book Week celebration ‘Book Swap’ was an amazing event and was a fun way to recommend stories to your friends and find out what books interest you!
