JUNIOR CAPTAIN

It has been an exciting few weeks at East Campus, with students and teachers coming together for a range of fantastic events and activities. From the creativity of Market Day to the excitement of Science Week and the imagination of Book Week, there has been plenty happening across the campus.

One of the highlights was our annual Market Day (made possible by the Interact Club), which brought plenty of energy and excitement to the Blue Courts. Students had the opportunity to put their entrepreneurial skills to the test, setting up stalls and selling a huge variety of products.

It was great to see so many students getting involved, whether they were running a stall, supporting their friends or simply exploring everything Market Day had to offer. The event was a wonderful demonstration of the creativity, initiative and community spirit of East Campus.

Science Week was another highlight, with activities running at lunchtime and recess every day. Students were able to get involved in a range of fun and interactive activities that demonstrated just how exciting science can be.

A particular highlight was the Year 9 Chemistry Show, Extraordinary Elements, presented by Mad About Science. All Year 9 students had the opportunity to watch the show as part of our National Science Week celebrations. The spectacular experiments showcased the wonder of chemistry and gave us a chance to see science beyond the classroom in a fun and engaging way.

We also celebrated Book Week, with activities taking place throughout recess and lunchtime. One of the most enjoyable activities was seeing teachers share passages from some of their favourite books. It was a great opportunity to hear about the stories that have inspired and entertained our teachers, while also discovering some new books ourselves.

The week finished with one of the most anticipated events: Book Week Dress-Up Day on Friday. Students and teachers came to school dressed as characters from their favourite books, resulting in a fantastic variety of costumes around the campus. It was great to see everyone embracing their favourite stories and characters and bringing them to life.

Overall, these events have made for a memorable and exciting few weeks at East Campus. As Junior School Deputy Captain, it has been fantastic to see students across all year levels getting involved, trying new things and contributing to the vibrant community that makes East Campus so special!

SENIOR CAPTAIN

McKinnon Secondary College is consistently delivering fantastic opportunities and experiences beyond the classroom, with the purpose of entertaining, educating and inspiring students. During this special time of year, teachers in their respective faculties hold dazzling events across one week to showcase the wonders of their chosen field. This month, McKinnon has hosted the delightful and highly anticipated annual Science Week and Book Week!

From Monday 17 - Friday 21 August, teachers across each STEM subject held a variety of activities to allow students to experience the wonders of science. Demonstrating phenomena in Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Physics, our science faculty at McKinnon managed to dazzle everyone whilst supplementing junior science courses in a fun and entertaining way. 

In particular, our Year 7 students were put to the test in the Plank Challenge, which occurred across Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. During recess and lunchtime, our teachers presented exciting displays of experiments and scientific phenomena, such as the ‘Miracle Berry’ and the infamous Imploding Watermelon. 

Of course, if the week wasn’t already action-packed, the teachers also organised fun quizzes and mini activities that occurred daily, such as the solar telescope at McKinnon Road and the Universe Sandbox at East. Overall, Science Week is a treasured yearly event at McKinnon Secondary College, which never fails to bring moments of magic and wonder to our school week.

In the week following, the English faculty hosted a week of literary magic, consisting of events related to books and film across the McKinnon Road and East campuses. Commencing the week with a bang, the school hosted a lively Book Trivia, followed by a book swap market on Tuesday. Next up, Wednesday saw an emotive and equally serene lunchtime wherein English teachers read their favourite passages from books on the outdoor stage, accompanied by ambient music. On Thursday, students put their imagination to the test in a Book Week baking competition, where the objective was to create a dish related to a story. 

And finally, we finished off the week with a whole-school dress-up day and the highly sophisticated (and highly rowdy) Teacher vs Student Debate! In order to maintain that Book Week excitement, McKinnon kept activities going all week long, so that students could experience the literary inspiration across the entire week!

Furthermore, it is important to celebrate the hard work of each respective faculty in putting together these fantastic week-long festivals at McKinnon. Most importantly, we would like to acknowledge Ms Katherine Johnstone, Head of Science, and Dr Natalie Day, Head of English, for their immense contribution to the Science Week and Book Week celebrations.
