Our Visual Arts Captains ensure our school community continues to develop and celebrate Art in all its forms. This year, they will adopt specific leadership roles within the program including organising and developing art shows, leading visual art clubs and competitions, and advocating for the Visual Arts within the college.

For the first time at Year 12 level, there is a captain to represent each of our three discipline areas, making visible the different ways we apply creative thinking, technical skill and visual language in Media Studies, Art Creative Practice and Visual Communication Design.

We would like to thank all students who applied for these positions and encourage all students to continue to get involved in art at McKinnon!

TERM 4 2025 ART COMPETITION WINNERS

Last year, the Term 4 Art competition prompt was movement, and we are so excited to share with you the top three artworks.

In third place, Kathy Wu of Year 9. Kathy described this piece to have captured movement in the tiger’s raw, predatory state. The tiger surges forward, its body twisting as if caught mid-prowl. Loose, energetic brushstrokes and blurred edges amplify the sense of motion, making the tiger feel alive and unstoppable. The dark background makes the tiger stand out and adds a sense of quiet power, a tension where strength, balance, and momentum collide.

In second place, Aanya Vadaliya of Year 9 has described the artwork as Badminton being something they are really passionate about. Ananya’s drawing captures the feeling of smashing the shuttle, which is the most exciting part of the game for them and their main source of inspiration.

After much deliberation, the winner of the Term Four Art Competition is Yukino Kakichi of Year 8 with a stunning painting of a dog, roughly shaking off water. The artist describes this painting as exploring movement through a fleeting action. The dog shaking off water captures a moment that lasts less than a second yet contains intense energy and motion.

The exploding droplets represent how movement is not only about physical motion, however the release of tension and transition from one state to another. This frozen instant highlights how ordinary action can hold power and life.

As an honourable mention, Idan Peress of Year 8. They have described their artwork as made of acrylic paint and is about a cat on its adventures in multiple different places as the sun rises while the cat is trying to find a place to call home.

We thank everyone who participated. Our next Art Competition prompt is Lost and found.

You are free to interpret this in any way you wish, and we look forward to more inspired artworks!
