RECONCILIATION WEEK ACTIVITIES

At McKinnon, we are proud to be increasing our understanding of Indigenous culture and perspectives. Reconciliation Week is a solid example of this where we are using every opportunity to raise awareness and empower our students to celebrate First Nations communities and think what can our next generation of learners do to help achieve reconciliation.

We kicked of NRW in style with a casual dress day on Wednesday 27 May, where students could "Wear it Yellow (Black and Red)", raising much needed funds for Children's Ground, a charity who supports Indigenous children in education and wellbeing, for community on Country. This year, we hit our target, raising just over $3,000! Our Interact Club at both campuses helped support this with running a BBQ on Friday 29 May.

The Senior Stage Band opened our General Assembly on Tuesday 2 June with "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil before Uncle Shane from the Bunurong Land Council made a speech about what NRW means to him and First Nations peoples.

Throughout the week, different faculties showcased activities in class and at lunch times to mark the occasion and be proud that McKinnon is All In for NRW 2026!

YEAR 12 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT EXCURSION TO YAKULT

It was a pleasure to attend the Yakult Factory in South Dandenong last week. The visit was directly linked to our Business Management Unit 3 Operations Management area of study and provided an informative insight into Yakult’s production and distribution processes. Throughout the tour, we were able to connect the theoretical concepts studied in class with real-world business operations, observing the inputs, processes, machinery, and quality control measures involved in the efficient manufacture and distribution of Yakult products.

The most valuable part of the excursion was seeing operations management concepts applied in a practical setting. We observed how Yakult utilises advanced technology and automated production systems to maximise efficiency and effectiveness, maintain consistency, and uphold high quality standards. The excursion also highlighted the importance of quality management, with strict procedures in place to ensure every bottle meets both company standards and customer needs.

Experiences such as this demonstrate the value of studying Business Management, allowing students to see how classroom learning is applied within successful organisations and how developing our knowledge through real-world examples can strengthen our understanding of business practices and operations. The excursion enhanced our understanding of operations management and provided practical examples that will support our studies throughout the year.

A big thank you to our amazing Business Management teacher Ms Jobson for affording us the opportunity and helping bring our theory to life!

DRUGS & ALCOHOL AWARENESS

In Term 2, we started the topic of Drugs and Alcohol Awareness in Mind, Body & Soul.

Throughout the duration of this educational unit, we got to learn about a variety of essential information, like the effects of drugs and alcohol, risk taking, laws associated with drugs, why people do it and how addiction starts.

During week 5, a guest speaker, Michael Raydan, came in and talked to us and the Year 9 cohort focusing on Drugs and Alcohol awareness. He went into full depth about his story and how drugs and alcohol affected him and his loved ones. From that, we have learnt the consequences to your body and surroundings after consuming drugs and alcohol especially well from Michael’s firsthand account. His story served as a powerful, eye-opening reality and how we could very well go through something like that in the future.

Many students, including us, found the session informative and exposing, as the presentation encouraged students to think carefully about peer pressure and the importance of making healthy choices. Overall, the talk was an important reminder for students to stay informed, seek support when needed, and make positive decisions for our future.
