YEAR 10 ENGLISH LANGUAGE EXCURSION

On Friday 8 May, the Year 10 English Language elective class went on an excursion to the city for our study on Australian accents and Australian English.

We started the day by walking to McKinnon Station and taking the train to Flinders Street Station. As we were on the train, we noticed the recorded announcement and how it was a more cultivated accent, which sounds more formal and is more clearly articulated than a ‘typical’ general accent.

From there, we walked to the Immigration Museum, where we looked at different stories and perspectives of immigration to Australia. We watched and listened to video recordings of people with different cultural backgrounds talking about their experiences, as we paid close attention to their accents and speech patterns. This gave us a better understanding of how to identify different kinds of Australian accents, particularly for those who learned English as an additional language.

After visiting the Immigration Museum, we took a tram to the Queen Victoria Market. We had time to explore the market and buy food. We also talked to various people, such as shopkeepers, and analysed the way they spoke. Overall, the excursion was an engaging experience that helped us solidify our learning for the unit.

JOURNALISM EXCURSION

On Friday 22 May, Ms Tucker and Ms Barber’s Year 9 Journalism classes travelled to the city for an ACMI exhibition called “The Story of the Moving Image” as well as a one-on-one session with a member of the community radio station Student Youth Network (SYN).

First, one of the two classes went to “The Story of the Moving Image” exhibition while the other travelled to SYN for a session on radio broadcasting. The ACMI exhibition featured a range of engaging content, including sketches from a video game, along with relics from the history of moving images, like old film cameras, sets from local films, and a breakdown of outfits from the TV series ‘Heartbreak High’.

At SYN Radio, we were fortunate enough to be given a chance to be featured on the Schools on Air program that SYN offered. Each class was divided into small groups, with each doing a small segment that would make up a radio broadcast. Students practised throwing to a song of their choice and bantering around a topic of their choice. Topics ranged from soccer discussions, or favourite travel locations, to an analysis of the latest season of Eurovision.

Overall, everyone learned a lot about media production and the history of visual storytelling, making our learning experience very enjoyable and memorable.
