YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY SEMESTER 2
Food Technology is an enjoyable and useful subject that teaches us essential skills in cooking, nutrition, and kitchen safety. We learn how to prepare an array of delicious dishes, from family meals to tasty desserts, which makes each lesson engaging, hands-on and always leaving a different experience.
The class also helps us understand the science and balance behind food, such as how various ingredients and flavours work together, and the importance of kitchen safety. We get to experiment with different recipes, develop our creativity, and improve our cooking skills.
Overall, Food Tech is a great way to build confidence in the kitchen and learn valuable life skills that we’ll use every day.
Alex Bouris, Year 9
In Food Technology this semester, we have unpacked a variety of foods. We read off a recipe then cut, peel and mush the ingredients together to make our dish. My favorite one that we have made so far, must be the burger and fries. In my opinion, this dish tasted the best and was the most interesting one to make.
However, we have also baked, cooked and fried many other dishes to help improve our knowledge on cooking different types of foods from all around the world. Just last week we made a Thai Chicken Curry, which tasted delicious. At the end of each class, our teacher always asks for feedback to improve the recipe to make it taste better. For example, for the Thai Curry, my feedback was that we shouldn’t add any lime leaves because it just didn’t fit with the dish.
Overall, I am really enjoying the subject, just as I did in Year 7, because we get to explore different meal opportunities that I don’t think I would’ve ever cooked outside of the class.
Marleen Wissmann, Year 9
In food tech theory we have been learning about many things. These include food preservation techniques, (where we made our own pickles) food safety, kitchen safety and many experiments. Such as a chip experiment. We made our own oven chips and our teacher made deep fried, air fried and frozen chips. We compared the difference of taste, appearance and health benefits of these different techniques.
We also did a pea experiment, preserving peas in many different solutions such as vinegar, concentrated salt and concentrated sugar. After a week we analyzed which are the best preservation techniques. Overall, this first term has been great in the theory and cooking department!
