YEAR 12 SUNSET BOULEVARD EXCURSION
On Tuesday 17 February, the entire Year 12 cohort met in Federation square to preview the film Sunset Boulevard, at the ACMI cinema. Sunset Boulevard will be the second area of study for the Year 12s as a part of their text analysis, following the first unit of English, Crafting Texts. Situated in the 500 seated cinema, we watched the captivating 1950’s noir film featuring stars of the time such as Gloria Swanson challenging the views and values of Hollywood in that period. The film brought forward the underlying truths of the society, highlighting the standards of Hollywood after moving away from silent films and Hollywood's cruelty with the discard of aging women.
After the movie, we were treated to an hour-long lecture unpacking crucial themes and motifs, exploring the genres of gothic horror and predatory femme fatale (deadly woman) in film noir genres. We also delved into important aspects of the film's analysis such as its purposefully cluttered mise en scene and meticulously crafted acting performance curated by the actors and director Billy Wilder that will help fuel our essays in a few months’ time.
We’d like to say a big thank you to the English teachers for organising such a huge and crucial event for all of the Year 12s!!

12EAL DAY IN
On Tuesday 17 February our Year 12 English Additional Language (12EAL) students participated in the teacher lead ‘12EAL DAY IN’.
Students:
engaged in brainstorming activities for a sample writing task about ‘Protest’ and predicted how they could respond.
reviewed previous written samples to the same writing task, using a checklist, and in groups deconstructed each sample for its merits and areas to improve.
developed their own writing voices and ideas by considering their personal interests and motivations.
considered real world protests, issues, events, historical or current to allude to in their writing.
began planning and drafting their ideas into logically sequenced prose.
Post presentation, our students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to develop their writing in preparation for the recent SAC on Wednesday 4 March.
Student reflections:
It was a great opportunity to improve my writing for the recent Protest SAC. This opportunity helped me see the difference between average and high-quality responses, and what I need to do to reach a higher standard.

This session was incredibly helpful for my sac preparation. The teacher provided insightful key knowledge and sample pieces for us to elaborate and analyse, especially when it comes to responding to the stimulus and sequencing ideas logically. It helped us to build more confidence for our first sac of the year.
We thank all the EAL teachers Ms Georgiou, Ms Phillips and Ms Anton for their incredible efforts and support in preparing and teaching, which makes the recent sac feel less daunting and I know exactly what I need to do to succeed in this particular assessment.
