A special moment for both the Year 7s and Year 12s, as they completed their first and last ever camp with the school. Both year levels attended the same campground in Phillip Island. It was a great chance for Year 7s to bond over activities and make new friends, and an equally great chance for the Year 12s to embrace their last camp and adventure together at McKinnon Secondary College. Whether it was bonding over a common fear of heights during the Giant Swing and High Ropes activities or working with new people in the team-building activities, this camp was a great place for students to both start and end their journey at McKinnon.

And with that, the first term of the school year has come to an end. On behalf of McKinnon Secondary College, we wish everyone a safe and happy two-week break before commencing again in Term 2, which will be jam-packed with more events, including Cross Country, Athletics, and other school activities.

JUNIOR CAPTAIN

Anyone present in the Hall at McKinnon Road Campus on Wednesday 18 March, whether performing or supporting, would know that this year’s House Music event was truly one for the ages. Monash, Gilmore, Flynn and Chisholm battled it out with their elite singing, dancing and instrumental skills, all with big hopes of taking home the win.

To start the night off with a bang, Ms Adler and Ms Angell warmed up the crowd with an exciting introduction, while our nervous performers waited huddled in house groups in anticipation of what was to come.

The choral groups for each house were the first to take the stage, each one bringing a new level of emotion and impact. Monash started us off with Journey’s famous hit, “Don’t Stop Believin”. Next up was Chisholm, who delivered a powerful rendition of “Brave” by Sarah Bareilles. Following this was Gilmore, who wowed us with a creative mashup of “Bleeding Love” and “Say Something”, leaving us all with our jaws on the floor. To finish it off, Flynn lit up the stage with “Somebody to Love” by Queen. By now, our judges were already shaking in their boots, stressing about the big decision ahead.

Next, it was time for instrumental, and the four bands were ready to rock. The entire crowd was feeling the groove after hearing a mashup of songs from “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” played by Chisholm, “Crazy in Love” performed by Monash, “Virtual Insanity” by Flynn, and “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Gilmore. Truly toe-tapping performances from our students on that stage.

Finally, our dancers from each house grabbed the spotlight, each hoping to impress the judges one last time. Gilmore had us on the edge of our seats with their incredible choreography to “Play That Sax” by Fleur East. Chisholm dazzled the crowd with their swaggy moves to “Good Morning” by Max Frost. Flynn took us back in time with their dance to “One Way or Another” by Blondie. Finally, to close the show, Monash brought it home with “Walking on Sunshine,” which impressed the judges enough to win them the competition in the end.

The quality of these incredible performances is truly a credit to all of our amazing captains and dedicated students. The drive and creativity shown throughout the event made it truly unforgettable. What an incredible display of talent and pride. We’ll have to wait until next year to see if Monash can defend the crown!
