YEAR 7 FOOD TECHNOLOGY
We live in a world with constant change. Everything around us changes from the weather, our activities and even the things we enjoy doing. One of the few constants we have is the need for food and nutrition each and every day.
Our Year 7 students have begun this amazing journey learning the ins and outs of the McKinnon Secondary Food Technology Kitchen. The year commences with the students learning about safety and hygiene, reading and interpreting recipes, measuring and kitchen equipment.
Term 1 was a large success, through traveling the world in cuisines; Laksa from Southeast Asia, Cannelloni from Italy and many others. It was great to watch each student become more confident in the kitchen and learn their way around the pots, pans and utensils. Throughout theory lessons, students had the opportunity to learn and understand different aspects of nutrition and what entails a healthy, balanced diet. They explored the Australian guide to healthy eating and the importance of certain essential macronutrients and the desired consumption amount in each of our meals.
While learning to cook is important, it is also an essential life skill to learn how to properly clean up your area and ensure that all materials are put away properly. This is enforced by bench checks after each cooking session and students being taught an efficient way to clean in a restricted period of time.
As we have now begun term 2, it is important for students to make sure that they bring a container to each of their food technology classes and are encouraged to show off their cooking skills at home.
