CAPTAIN'S CORNER

SENIOR CAPTAIN

A warm welcome back, parents, students, and teachers to an exciting and action-packed Term 2! We hope the holidays were restful and provided a chance for everyone to both recover from the busy Term 1 and prepare for all that is to come this term!

For many students, the break offered time to catch up with friends and family, but for the Year 11 students, it was time to set off on their much-anticipated Central Australia Camp! As one of the most incredible and life-changing experiences offered at McKinnon, this 10-day trip saw students travel across the country, exploring from Renmark in South Australia, up to Coober Pedy in outback South Australia, and finally to the breathtaking Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

A big shout out to all the teachers who gave up their holidays to organise and be part of this amazing journey, giving students an experience of a lifetime!

Looking towards Term 2, in this first week back we had a special edition of our General Assembly to commemorate ANZAC Day. This gave us an opportunity to reflect on the values of courage and perseverance shown by all Australians during this time, and how important an ongoing commitment to these pillars of peace and community is in today’s uncertain world.

We also kicked off the term with our annual Cross Country event on Friday 24 April. This year’s theme was “Heroes,” and it was fantastic to see students from all year levels, along with teachers, taking part in either the 3 km or 5 km run around our local parks. With the sun shining and positive energy all around, it was a great way to begin Term 2.

JUNIOR CAPTAIN

Term 2 began last Monday, and it has been a vibrant and energetic start to our second quarter, as it always is at East Campus.

Late last term, the Year 9 students had the privilege of hearing from the Honourable Major General Peter Dunn AO. Major Dunn spoke graciously about his experiences working in many important, high-pressure environments. By hearing the stories of a career filled with outstanding acts of service, we gained a further appreciation of McKinnon's famous motto, “Wisdom & Service”.

At our General Assembly on Thursday morning, Mr Kan also reiterated the importance of living our motto, with a special emphasis on “Service” leading into ANZAC Day. The junior and senior School Captains, accompanied by the brilliant senior choir, attended ANZAC day services at local RSLs.

This is a time when we are reminded that service is not just a word in our motto, but a commitment to honouring those who gave everything for the lives we lead today.

Lest we forget.
